For sale we have this beautiful, antique (early 1880’s) all original and intact cast iron wood-burning residential fireplace stove insert/grate with its original figural cover. Gorgeous and highly desirable! The insert has all of its pieces and the vents and their respective mechanisms are all present. However, please note that the short control arm which extends out of the front of the piece to open and close the upper vent after installation is missing. This arm would be similar to but shorter than the lower arm (bottom right) as seen in the photos which controls the lower vent. The centrally located figural medallion on the summer cover depicts a beautifully detailed image of the goddess”Minerva”. She is the Roman goddess of wisdom, strategy, medicine, commerce, poetry, and the arts in general. Surrounding her are highly stylized motifs of winged dragons, a rams head as well as incredibly intricate scrolls and detailed foliage. It measures just over 2 feet (25 3/8″) wide by just over 2 1/2 feet (31″+) high x 13 1/2 deep. Please note there appears to be a very small approx 1/4 hole casting flaw near the very top edge of the cover plate. This small hole sits in a small approx. 1 1/4 solid indentation (casting flaw) in the cast iron. (see photos of the front and back of the plate -last two photos).
