Specialist in the conservation & restoration of kitchen ranges. First picture to illustrate what an installed range of this type looks like. Here we have a fully restored’midlands’ pattern range. There ranges are recognizable by the curve profile to the inner edge of both front plate castings and their highly decorative design. This particular patterns dates to the mid 19th century but the manufacture date is later. The range has a generous firebox, water boiler and oven and the entire arrangement is constructed of thick cast iron. It is presented here for sale in A1 condition and is fully functional after going through extensive professional restoration in our workshops near Bath. Details of the work carried out are at the bottom of this listing. We can also provide a specialist fitting service if required to traditional’set’ this range ensuring it works as it should and can be used for heating cooking and hot water. Full certification and training is included as part of this service. If required we can also supply and install high quality copper back boilers to feed either a hot water tank or contribute to your central heating system. Depth of top plate – 17. Before any work is carried out all our ranges are fully dismantled to their components parts. Each part is then inspected for damage and wear and the whole batch is cleaned of rust and scale using a wheelabrator. It is important to note cast iron should not be grit/ sand blasted as this damages the iron. Next all parts showing damage are repaired usually by bronze brazing. We also use full fusion gas welding and mechanical repair techniques. Any parts that are in too advanced state of decay to be preserved are replaced with new grey iron castings. We make all our patterns in house in the traditional method and use a small artisan foundry to produce high quality castings in green sand. The fettling, machining and finishing of the new castings is also carried out in house. All castings are then treated to 3 coats of VHT paint on their internal faces and 3 coats of traditional’black lead’ (graphite) polish on any surfaces that can be seen. The sheet metal of any range is its Achilles heel as it cannot be replaced without removing the range and dismantling it. That is why we choose to replace all the sheet metal on our restorations with high quality stainless steel. This ensures the range will be incredibly durable and there is no risk of sheet metal failing. The sheet metal is all fixed with stainless steel rivets set by hand. The firestones are renewed and all the fixings are replaced with stainless. The range is then carefully reassembled piece by piece ensuring all internal working elements are working as they should. When required the component parts are sealed to ensure a strong draw when the range is installed back into the chimney. A range has no seals so its smoke tightness relies entirely on it being properly assembled. This is why we ensure we are meticulous in our methods. Finally the range is buffed to a deep sheene and is ready for another lifetime of service once again.
