We found this old beauty in a shed in Durham, CT not too far from where it was cast in North Carver, Massachusetts south of Boston. It was all there but rusty and dirty – obviously a survivor (One of the legs has been brazed). We hauled it out, cleaned it up, and gave it a coat of stove polish (an old high-temperature wax which is the correct finish for these old stoves). The stove is lined with firebrick which has cracked and been repaired a few times but the stove itself is in very good condition. The stove has a fascinating imprint cast into the back plate. This actually gives us quite bit of information. The model number (apparently the GRIFFITH CO made stoves of various design). Of a special feature – a “portable grate”. Indeed the horizontal bar grate easily lifts from its hook mounting. This design allowed the home owner to bring the grate to his main stove and load it with already burning embers and voila! Instant heat in the parlor. Griffith first name Bent(ly). Where it was made – Carver is a town due south of Boston at the entrance to the Cape. The date of manufacture – 1862. The open front means the stove acted as a fireplace allowing you to view a fire without actually having a fireplace. This great old piece of American history, with its nice design, could still function, or serve as a wonderful decorator/conversation piece. It weighs in at 175 lbs. The stove measures 24 1/2″ W x 30″ H x 20 D. The flue opening is 4″ x 9″. This is a perfect working stove in the cellar of my 1895 Victorian home. When the outside temp goes below 15 degrees, I fire up this work of art with the accumulated wood from around my property. Years ago burnt coal for weeks at a time. If you know how to work these things, you can make it glow at the lower belly! But, be careful, that’s how to burn down your house. The heat is amazing, prevents frozen pipes in the cellar and walls. Footprint is 27″ x 27″ and 47 to the stove top. I have owned and used this beauty since 1960, All the doors are snug and work properly, no parts missing, the deflection baffle is there in the upper chamber, all the bolts are there. There is a crack in the front of the lower belly which was there when I bought this stove and all these years later has not progressed and remains unchanged, it’s tight and does not leak. These stoves have interesting histories and today are very rare, lots got junked because you must have working knowledge of how to start these up without filling your dwelling with smoke to be successful at the hours and hours of free heat you get. This is a working stove with solid original grates, not a restored show piece for display. Although you can paint it and make it look nice. William Buck Antique Cast Iron Wood Burning Cook Stove. Please note that the pictures featured are similar, but not exact. This antique wood stove was disassembled while moving, and never reassembled. The pictures above are the closest in comparison we could find, (The main photo is almost a dead ringer). What we know about the stove. It was originally manufactured in Canada by the William Buck Stove Company, around the late 1890 to very early 1900. The name plate on the stove is “Happy Thought” and while this name is very pronounced on it, I still could not find an exact picture of it online. We used this stove as a show piece for a retail store, so other than for looks, we have never used the stove for its intended purpose; we are uncertain if this will still function as a wood burning stove. Will take some work assembling, all parts are counted for and included. It really is a stunning antique wood burning stove. Comes with all burner plates, trivets, handles, etc. Priced low as I need it gone and I’m just looking for it to go to a home that will appreciate it. Yeah, cast iron is hefty. Here you have a Tappan, Antique Porcelain Enamel Cast Iron gas stove/oven. This is a wonderful piece and a great conversational item! It shows very well and gets lots of compliments! It has a very unique history, as it was featured in a book about symbols and how they have changed over the years. This particular stove was made in 1925, before the war. On the gas handles; but at the time, it was a symbol of “good will” and “good luck” only. I bought this stove at an estate sale in 2002. It was actually still being used and we had to disconnect it. It has been sitting in my kitchen ever since, we never hooked it back up because we just used it as a decoration piece. I have no reason to believe it would not work, but you would have to get it checked (as I’m sure you would do to any older gas piece, before using it).
